About us

WHO WE ARE

We are a research group at the K.G. Jebsen Centre for Deep Sea Research imbedded in the Department of Earth Science at the University of Bergen. We are an interdisciplinary group with expertise in microbiology, geomicrobiology and mathematics with a current core group consisting of group leader Steffen Leth Jørgensen, post doc Sven Le Moine Bauer, post doc Andreas Türke, phd student Tor Einar Møller and technician. Our group is funded by the Trond Mohn foundation (TMS) through their recruitment program, Research Council of Norway through the EnterDeep project and the K G Jebsen foundation

WHAT WE DO

We investigate the wonders of the immense microbial biosphere that is hidden beneath the ocean floor, where it controls the partitioning of elements between Earth’s surface and the deep subsurface. This has profound implications for the geochemical composition of the oceans, propagating to the atmosphere and long-term climate variability. Despite its global significance we lack fundamental knowledge concerning this biosphere. Our ability to interpret empirical observations is severely limited by the fact that the majority of the more than 1029microbial cells belong to uncharacterized lineages. This lack of knowledge concerning microbial physiology obscures critical geomicrobial interactions, leaving process models unconstrained and our understanding rudimentary. In addition, we know hardly anything about the dynamics of these ecosystem, primarily due to the fact that they are very difficult to monitor over time. Our research group try to overcome these obstacles and progress the research field of geomicrobiology in the deep marine biosphere.
